Glyptography comes from the Greek word glyptos which means to carve. In jewelry, glyptography is the art of gemstone carving. A glyptographical carving in Sardonyx conch shell depicting a scene from classical mythology: we see the youthful Hebe, the cupbearer of the gods, pouring a drink of nectar into a bowl for Zeus, the father of the gods, in the form of an eagle, to drink. Ganymede, the handsome youth, holds the bowl for Zeus to drink from. This magnificent, finely detailed scene is set in a polished 18K rose gold plain border and was made in circa 1860.
